Entice - Geology of Giant City Smokey Bear Fire Prevention Fall Wetland Ecology Field Trip Touch of Nature Workshops Giant City State Park Public Programs Wonders of Winter Walks on Saturdays - December 9, from 1:00PM - 2:30PM Let’s discover the many ways that plants and animals adjust to the winter cold. ENTICE - Geology of Giant City Location: Giant City State Park, Makanda Date: June 15, 2007 Time: 8:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. Join scientists from the Illinois State Geological Survey as they enlighten us about the unique geological formations at Giant City State Park. Targeted to educators of grades four through eight, this workshop will include discussions about natural cycles of the earth, interactions of the earth’s components, how physical processes influence the availability of natural resources and much more. We’ll see how these and other topics relate to Giant City as we tour the park. Supplemental educational materials will be provided and demonstrated throughout the day. SIUC Touch of Nature Environmental Education Workshops Take your class on an exciting, educational, environmental adventure! Touch of Nature (TON) Environmental Center offers experiential workshops that are hands-on, interactive, and full of discovery. Enhance your students’ sense of place as they learn from our environmental educators while surrounded by TON’s glorious natural setting. Each topic may be explored by itself for a 3-hour workshop or multiple topics may be combined for a daylong or even multiple day, residential experience. All workshops are grade-appropriate. We are happy to tailor the duration and information content of your excursion to meet your specific objectives. Fees vary according to workshop specifications. Our current staff has extensive knowledge and experience in numerous areas of ecological interest. These include environmental education, recreation, geology, forestry, plant and soil sciences, wildlife sciences, and avian ecology - all well suited to interpret the natural systems present at TON. Winter Survival in Southern Illinois 12.A, 12.B (How do plants and animals survive the sub-freezing temperatures of winter?) Two Grants Available from the IDNR Division of Education A. The "Illinois Biodiversity Field Trip Grant" from the IDNR Division of Education has a new annual application deadline of January 31. A revised application form can be downloaded through the IDNR web site at the following address: http://www.dnr.state.il.us/lands/education/CLASSRM/grants.htm Only the revised application form will be accepted. This popular program offers funds for teachers to take students out of the classroom to study some aspect of Illinois biodiversity. This competitive grant program makes awards of up to $500 per teacher available. B. The "Schoolyard Habitat Action Grant" program allows teachers, nature centers and youth organizations to apply for up to $600 for development or improvement of wildlife habitat. Environmental Education Association of Illinois (EEAI) Mini-Grants Check out the EEAI website at eeai.net to print the guidelines for these $200 grants, for both formal and non-formal educators. Apply for anything from teaching materials to field trips. DEADLINE is Sept. 30. Be sure to follow the "criteria for judging grant submissions" and be specific in your proposal description.
