Day of Service 2007

On Saturday, September 8, 2007, BSISA participated in the Saluki Volunteer Corps’ “Day of Service” event. The event was once again a tremendous success. A total of 215 SIUC students volunteered! Thank you SIUC Saluki Volunteer Corps for sponsoring the event, and a big thank you also to all the SIUC students who joined BSISA in this outstanding volunteer service event!

The Day of Service event offered several volunteer project opportunities during the morning of service. We are tremendously happy to report that the overwhelming majority of the volunteers assisted with positive environmental projects that BSISA supports including:

  • A litter cleanup in Carbondale in support of Keep Carbondale Beautiful
  • Trail work at the SIUC Touch of Nature Environmental Center
  • Planting flowers in downtown Carbondale to support Carbondale Main Street

All of these positive environmental projects qualify for the Environmental Ambassador Award which requires 30 or more hours in an academic year devoted to positive environmental volunteerism.

Volunteers assembled at the Student Center to begin the “Day of Service” event. Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity brothers are seen here smiling on the front row. A tremendous turn out!
The SIUC Cross Country Track Team turned out in force to volunteer.
Alpha Kappa Alpha volunteers take a moment to pose with some of the litter they collected along the strip area of Carbondale. THANKS AKA!
SIUC students turned out in force to help Carbondale Main Street plant flowers in downtown Carbondale. These young ladies and gentlemen can be proud of their job! When you drive by these beautiful flowers, they will know that their efforts have helped to beautify our community! Volunteers: be sure to remind your family & friends that those are YOUR flowers they just drove by!

The SIUC Cross Country team stops for a group photo with some of the litter they collected in Carbondale. Want to meet the team, visit: http://siusalukis.cstv.com/sports/c-xc/mtt/silu-c-xc-mtt.html

Coach Matt Sparks and Athletic Director Mario Moccia, you can be proud of the tremendous effort your team put forward today, they did a tremendous job!

The SIUC Geography Club tackled Piles Fork Creek near the SIUC campus. As you can see, the Geography Club took their job quite seriously and collected some of the most unusual items of the day, including three bicycles & a microwave that had been thrown into the creek. Thank you Geography Club for helping to make a difference!

BSISA President Joe Batir celebrates the end of a tremendously successful Day of Service!
BSISA members, officers, their advisor and a community volunteer pose for a quick photo.
