Crab Orchard Clean Up 2008 In celebration of Public Lands Day, Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge hosted a Refuge wide clean-up on Sept 20th, 2008. This event was registered with the National Public Lands Day website and several press releases were done as well as radio and television interviews. The clean-up brought out a record number of 240 volunteers. Among the volunteers were Saluki Volunteer corps, several Scout groups, fraternities, sororities, 4-H groups and clubs from Southern Illinois University. Refuge volunteers lent a helping hand by cooking lunch and picking up collected trash. It turned out to be a successful day with several truck loads of trash being collected and four dumpsters filled. All volunteers were given a free t-shirt and lunch.
