On Saturday, September 6, 2008, Southern Illinois University Carbondale Student Development hosted the "2008 Day of Service" volunteer event. The event raises student's awareness of volunteer service opportunities and offers a number of volunteer opportunities for a great morning of volunteering. This year's Day of Service allowed students to pick from several volunteer choices. These volunteer options included two excellent environmental projects:

 

Keep Carbondale Beautiful litter cleanup day. Keep Carbondale Beautiful is a significant partner of the Beautify Southern Illinois Campaign which is devoted to beautifying the community of Carbondale and sponsor and support environmental education and

Carbondale Main Street's fall flower planting to help beautify downtown Carbondale.

 

Students also assisted with the Happy Factory, a program at the Student Center Craft Shop to make wooden toys for children in need;  Cards for U.S. soldiers, creating handmade cards of appreciation for American service personnel wherever they are around the globe; and painting T-shirts for orphaned children in Zambia.

 

The 2008 Day of Service was a tremendous success with over 200 SIU Carbondale students giving their entire morning to provide volunteer service. Many students volunteered as part of a group and others came out as individual volunteers.
