BSISA Garden of the Gods Cleanup November 13, 2010
On Saturday, November 13, 2010, twenty nine SIU Carbondale students and one soon to be student traveled to the Garden of the Gods in the Shawnee National Forest (SNF) for an outing and litter cleanup sponsored by the Beautify Southern Illinois Student Alliance (BSISA) registered student organization. For the first day in weeks, it rained. However, the light rain did not deter these wonderful volunteers.
The students cleaned up litter along the Garden of the Gods trails and rock formations. A significant amount of litter was collected and disposed of via the SNF dumpster and many of the volunteers also separated easily recyclable materials including aluminum cans and bottles. The students recycled these materials upon returning to Carbondale.
During the cleanup, we ran into a group of students from the University of Illinois @Urbana-Champaign's Outdoor Club who had traveled to southern Illinois for a camping and hiking weekend. One of them said part of the motivation for their outing was the news that Garden of the Gods is to appear on a United States Mint quarter. They just had to see it. We are glad they visited, and offered them trash bags to use next time :-)
