Crab Orchard National Wildlife Cleanup September 18, 2010
On a beautiful Saturday morning, 196 volunteers from throughout the region came out to help pick up litter within the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge (CONWR). The volunteers were a tremendously diverse group including:
- Unaffiliated individuals
- Youth organizations such as the Cub Scout Troupe 77 from Carterville
- Numerous families
- several student groups from Southern Illinois University Carbondale: Society of American Foresters, Zoology & Wildlife Society, Shawnee Heritage Interpreters, Eco-Dawgs & Etta Kappa Nu, Geography Club
The efforts of these volunteers is greatly appreciated. Their hard work has helped to beautify our region. The litter which uncaring individuals had thrown on the ground or in the lakes defiles CONWR, one of our region's true gems. One young lady about 10 years old, as she stood in line to get a hot dog after the cleanup made a profoundly accurate and blunt statement: "People who throw stuff out their windows are stupid idiots."
