SIUC Day of Service Event a Tremendous Success
On Saturday, September 11, 2010, the Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) Saluki Volunteer Corps/Student Development sponsored an annual "Day of Service" event for SIUC students.
Approximately 120 students participated in the SIUC Day of Service event. Students volunteered to assist with a number of projects:
- The Birdhouse Factory: constructing and painting birdhouses to raise money for charity.
- Zambian Children’s Center: designing T-shirts for orphaned children in Kabwe, Zambia.
- Boys and Girls Club: Participated in the 9/11 day of remembrance activities and painting at the club.
- Carbondale litter cleanup in support of Keep Carbondale Beautiful
Due to the amount of rain during the preceding days, a fall flower planting in downtown Carbondale to support Carbondale Main Street had to be postponed.
The Carbondale cleanup project included litter cleanup around the SIUC Campus Lake; Thompson Woods, and numerous streets and areas in Carbondale. Volunteers were from the following SIUC student organizations: Beautify Southern Illinois Student Alliance; Geography Club; Sigma Kappa Sorority; Circle K; Black Women's Task Force; Iota Phi Theta Delta Phi Mu;Pre-Health Professions Association; and the Microbiology Student Organization . The volunteerism of these students is greatly appreciated and such volunteer service does make a difference in beautifying our region!
